Shirlaws to Provide Sponsorship and Mentoring for the 2017 CityStarters Weekend

Shirlaws will be providing sponsorship and mentoring for the 2017 CityStarters Weekend, held by City, University of London. The event will take place from 27-29 October and will see students from across their range of five schools, including Cass Business School, come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, improve their CVs and increase their entrepreneurship skills. This is the third year that the weekend will be running after two previously successful events.

Last year there were over 100 undergraduate and postgraduate students who attended, and working in teams, gave 45 pitches, which were narrowed down to 15 finalists. These 15 teams got the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, gaining invaluable experience in this often intimidating, but crucial part of business. One lucky team eventually took home the prize money, and the format will be very similar for the 2017 event, with Shirlaws sponsoring a prize this year.

Shirlaws’ intent is to ‘Change People’s Lives’ and we achieve this in myriad ways, our hope is that through providing sponsorship of a prize and mentoring of competitors at this start-up weekend, we may in some way positively impact lives over this three-day event.

The weekend will help developers, designers, marketers and start-up enthusiasts solve real-world problems, increase their employability skills and provide both an opportunity and a platform for learning. Attendees will have a chance to pitch their ideas, talk through them with like-minded individuals, seek advice and inspire others to join them and launch a start-up. This process of interaction helps spread passion and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship and demonstrates the importance of collaboration in business.

Attendees will learn about product and customer development, how to validate their ideas, lean start up methods, minimal viable products (MVP) and much more from a team of experienced entrepreneurs and business owners in attendance. Several coaches from Shirlaws will be attending the weekend in a mentoring capacity which will allow them to share their knowledge, skills and experience in everything from product development, to how to take it to market.

This event is an excellent opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to learn practical ways to make their ideas/visions become a reality. Most ideas can be translated into something tangible, and often it simply means having the right mindset and confidence to go out there and do it. This is one of the main drivers of this CityStarters Weekend.

Shirlaws Group CEO Andrea Dean is a Cass Business School alumna and she had this to say about her experiences learning at Cass:

The Cass Business School EMBA programme gave me access to a very international student cohort and alumni group. Working through much of the coursework in teams, we represented many different business experiences and points of view. Collaboration on business issues was key to the success of anyone on the course, and that translated directly back into the workplace.”

This event is free and open to all students enrolled at City, University of London in 2017/18. To find out more about the event click here.
